Battlefield 2042

The work that I did for this game was mostly bug fixing or small additions to the already existing systems and codebase due to the fact that the project was already heading towards its finalling stage. I worked on systems such as skins, loadouts, weapons, and vehicles. My biggest learning experience from this project was being introduced to such a large codebase and having to patch up many of its different systems. This required me to recognize code patterns quicker as well as how to communicate effectively with the rest of the team so that we could share the knowledge amongst each other.

I’ve had the opportunity to work on this project since its prototyping stage up until now when we are in the midst of production. I’ve done some gameplay work around building some of the new game modes we have for the game but my main focus has been on building an open world AI system that manages several entities that the player can engage with both in a single-player and multiplayer context. One of the challenges of working on this feature has been adapting already existing AI code from previous titles to provide the wanted player experience while laying the groundwork for how this system will be developed and improved upon in future titles.

Besides having the chance to work on the projects mentioned above, I have many other takeaways from my time at Criterion. I got the chance to interview and onboard other interns which gave me the chance to share the knowledge I gained from having been in their position not too long ago. Having the opportunity to represent Criterion at events such as Your Future Your Ambition was really rewarding, having the chance to inspire young kids and teens on the joy of game development. While doing my last year of university I continued to work at Criterion part-time and while it was challenging it has also taught me a lot in terms of the importance of proper planning and time management.
